Senator Daphne Campbell swearing speech Dec 8,2016
Honorable mayors, commissioners, and elected officials, reverend clergies, distinguished guests, families and friends
First and foremost, giving honor to God, for without his blessings, grace, and mercy, I would not be standing before you today!
Second, I am humbled and grateful for the trust and confidence that the people of district 38 have accorded me to represent them as the First Senator in this newly created district.
Thank you for allowing me this great privilege to serve you and to be your voice in Tallahassee as I promise you to always put District 38 best interest first!
It’s a privilege I never could have imagined some years ago when, as young Haitian woman, I decided to travel to America, with a dream of a better life than what I knew in Haiti. Early on, I worked hard, became a nurse, and developed a deeper passion in caring for the sick and the people most vulnerable in my community.
Today, I stand before you as the First Haitian American Elected to serve in the Florida Senate! There are no words to describe my emotions and humble feelings! I can only be grateful and thankful to God Almighty!
Allow me to acknowledge and to send special thanks to my family and children, whose love and support have helped sustain me throughout the election campaign season, the North Miami Beach Mayor and all Commissioners, Nicole Gomez chief of staff, my Campaign Manager, Charly Nacivre; My Legal advisor Attorney Gina Olivier-Tyler; Finance Director Hudson Robilliard; Campaign supervisor Frantzy Bermadin; Political strategist Maxo Sinal; Dr. Flore Lindor; Eli Nortelus; Jean Castor; Eddie Andre; Nancy Paul; Leeth Ambroise; Jenny Mahotiere; Alix Jean Jacques also known as Tilou; my Decorator Sophia; My volunteers ,….If I were to stand here and Name all of the people to thank we would be here all night.,.… You know who you are. Thank you all who made this possible.
Only six years ago, I began my public service as a member of the Florida House of Representatives in District 108. It has been six years of challenges, sacrifices and trials that have helped make me a better public servant, a tougher fighter, and a stronger voice for those who elected me to serve my district.
During the election, I pledged to the people of District 38, to make it the most progressive district in Florida. I am calling on you to join me in this journey as we are stronger together!
I am never afraid of challenges as I know you have my back. I will work hard every day and will stand resolute to make sure that every child get a good education, breathe clean air and water and that every citizen in this state would have the opportunity to live the American dream!
My vision is clear, my determination is firm, and my heart is committed to the basic and core issues that matter most to all of us:
• Stronger economic Development and New Jobs creation by strengthening our local economy and protecting our local industries and businesses.
• Improving the quality of life and ensuring strong funding for our schools, colleges and universities.
• Securing the best healthcare for all of our people.
• Protecting and enhancing the lives of our senior citizens.
• Promoting affordable housing for our working class families.
• Promoting youth development programs that give them the skills they need to work harder, learn more, reach higher.
• Responding intelligently to the issue of climate change.
• Supporting Faith-Based initiatives and solutions.
• And, last but not least, expanding and improving our tourism industry, which is so vital to the future of our District.
I have always believed that more government is not the solution to our state’s problems. The solution is building stronger communities centered on faith, family, and values; communities made stronger with the grace of God, a fierce determination, and a Faith grounded in humility, gratitude, and generosity.
Let us not forget that when God is with us, who can be against us?
United we stand. We are a family and together we will see all of the cities of District 38 shining brighter for all their residents.
Together, we will make District 38 the most progressive senate district in Florida.
