While it is obvious that Haitians have a very difficult life at home, it is now clear that foreigners are also playing their role in ripping off Haitians. It is cheaper to fly from America to Europe than to fly from America to Haiti.
Even though the oil prices have dropped, the airfares seem to be rising. The average ticket price from NYC to Port au Prince is nearly $1,100. The Haitian government agreed that tourism needs to be a priority but with such air fares who will ever come to Haiti? Both Jet Blue and American airlines are gouging Haitians with astronomical airfares. This is just the basic charge-there are more fees added on for extra baggage, food and boarding passes. Everything on an airplane comes with an extra cost. The only thing free right now is air but knowing these two airlines, they will probably start charging Haitians for the air also.
With such airfares, it is very unlikely that Haiti will ever become a tourist destination. Inclusive packages to Cuba and other Caribbean islands are less than $800 for a week from the USA. Why the Haitian government has not demanded price reductions is a mystery. Perhaps we should start offering other airlines air routes to Haiti because we are in bad need of competition. The monopoly between JetBlue and American airlines has got all Haitians cornered.
All Haitians should try and avoid jetblue and American airlines, if they have a choice. Until Haiti has its own airlines, I guess all Haitian are at the mercy of these thieves.
